Radon Tests for Homeowners

Radon Environmental can provide you with a do-it-yourself EPA-approved charcoal canister radon test. To test radon levels, expose the device in your home for 48 hours before sealing it and returning it to the lab. Results usually take about a week. The cost is $35 for one 4” charcoal canister, instructions, a pre-paid mailer, and lab analysis.

The EPA recommends that the testing device(s) be placed in the lowest level of the home suitable for occupancy. The test should be done in a room that is used regularly, such as a family room, living room, or bedroom. Do not test in a kitchen, bathroom, laundry room, or a hallway.

Diagnostic Testing

When high levels of radon or chemical vapors are found, we then perform air pressure field diagnostic testing which provides data we can use to design a mitigation system. Air pressure testing is done using uses micro manometers to measure the air pressure under the slab of a building.

Mitigation system design includes the number of systems needed, fan model, number of suction points in the slab, vent stack size, and routing of the PVC vent stack.

For real estate transactions we recommend Continuous Radon Monitors (CRMs).

These devices measure and record the amount of radon in the air on an hourly basis to detect any unusual or abnormal swings in the radon level.

Test prices start at $175 for a 48-hour test in the Indianapolis, IN area.
